Short but Sweet Life

DIY Pot for Under $5

Previously I wrote about planting seeds to grow vegetables at my new apartment. Click below to learn how!

Well now that you have a seedling, you are probably wondering what to do with it. It is time to plant it into a pot! In this post I explain how I got a 5 gallon pot for under $5.

Potting vegetable plants is a great option for those of us that do not own a yard or have the space to make a garden. My favorite inexpensive method to pot vegetable plants is using 5 gallon buckets. Many vegetable plants require lots of room to grow, making this an inexpensive way to purchase a large pot with a built in handle. The only extra step needed is to use a drill to puncture drainage holes at the bottom of the bucket. A tomato cage fits perfectly in the bucket to help support tall plants or plants that need to vine. Many conventional pots narrow at the bottom, which I have found makes it more difficult for the tomato cage to fit properly into the container.

What if you want a cheap option for a pot, but don’t want to sacrifice aesthetics? Here are several ideas you can utilize to decorate your 5 gallon bucket:

  • Spray Paint the Bucket a Fun Color
  • Wrap the Bucket in Burlap
  • Adhere Rope Around the Bucket
  • Mix Water Based Paint with Baking Powder to Give the Bucket a Ceramic Look

I didn’t have a preference on the way my bucket looked, because it is being kept in a greenhouse. If you are interested in me attempting one of the above decorating ideas, please comment below what I should try! If you’re not convinced I can make a bucket pot look nice, please give me the opportunity to prove you wrong!

So far this year, my plants are thriving in their bucket pots! Below are some pictures of my journey thus far.
